So he came near and threw stones at her, and mocked her, and she looked at him with terror in her eyes, nor did she move her gaze from him.

And when the Woodcutter (и когда Дровосек), who was cleaving logs in a haggard hard by (и когда дровосек, который колол дрова недалеко от своего дома; to cleave — раскалывать), saw what the Star-Child was doing (увидел, что делал Звездный Мальчик), he ran up (он подбежал; to run (ran, run)) and rebuked him (и стал отчитывать его; to rebuke — упрекать; делать выговор), and said to him: 'Surely thou art hard of heart (вот уж верно, что у тебя жестокое сердце; thou art = you are) and knowest not mercy (и не знаешь сострадания/милосердия; knowest = know), for what evil (что дурного: «какое зло») has this poor woman done to thee (сделала тебе эта бедная женщина; thee = you) that thou shouldst treat her in this wise (что ты обращаешься с ней таким образом; shouldst = should; wise — способ)?'

And the Star-Child grew red with anger (и Звездный Ребенок покраснел от гнева; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться), and stamped his foot upon the ground (и топнул ногой о землю), and said, 'Who art thou to question me (кто ты такой, чтобы задавать мне вопросы о том; art thou = are you) what I do (что я делаю)? I am no son of thine (я не твой сын; thine = yours) to do thy bidding (чтобы исполнять твои приказания; bidding — предложение цены; приказание, распоряжение; thy = your).'

And when the Woodcutter, who was cleaving logs in a hangar hard by, saw what the Star-Child was doing, he ran up and rebuked him, and said to him: 'Surely thou art hard of heart and knowest not mercy, for what evil has this poor woman done to thee that thou shouldst treat her in this wise?'

And the Star-Child grew red with anger, and stamped his foot upon the ground, and said, 'Who art thou to question me what I do? I am no son of thine to do thy bidding.'

'Thou speakest truly (верно ты говоришь; speakest = speak),' answered the Wood-cutter (ответил Дровосек), 'yet did I show thee pity (и все же я пожалел: «проявил к тебе сострадание»; to show — показывать; проявлять, обнаруживать) when I found thee in the forest (когда я нашел тебя в лесу).'

And when the woman heard these words (и когда та женщина услышала эти слова; to hear (heard)) she gave a loud cry (и громко закричала; to give (gave, given), cry — крик), and fell into a swoon (и упала в обморок; to fall (fell, fallen)). And the Woodcutter carried her (и Дровосек отнес ее) to his own house (в свой /собственный/ дом), and his wife had care of her (и его жена позаботилась о ней), and when she rose up from the swoon (и когда она пришла в себя после обморока; to rise (rose, risen) — подниматься; восходить; воскресать, оживать) into which she had fallen (в который она упала до этого), they set meat and drink before her (они поставили перед ней еду и питье; meat — мясо, пища; drink — питье, напиток), and bade her have comfort (и попросили ее устраиваться поудобнее).
