And his Soul besought him to depart, but he would not, so great was his love. And the sea came nearer, and sought to cover him with its waves, and when he knew that the end was at hand he kissed with mad lips the cold lips of the Mermaid and the heart that was within him brake. And as through the fulness of his love his heart did break, the Soul found an entrance and entered in, and was one with him even as before. And the sea covered the young Fisherman with its waves.

And in the morning (а утром) the Priest went forth to bless the sea (вышел Священник, чтобы благословить/перекрестить море), for it had been troubled (потому что оно накануне взбушевалось: «взволновалось»). And with him went the monks (и с ним шли монахи) and the musicians (и музыканты = певчие), and the candle-bearers (и служки со свечами: «и носильщики свечей»; to bear — переносить; носить, нести), and the swingers of censers (и служки с кадильницами: «и те, кто размахивают кадильницами»; to swing — качать, колебать; раскачивать, размахивать), and a great company (и многочисленное общество /молящихся/; company — общество, компания).

And in the morning the Priest went forth to bless the sea, for it had been troubled. And with him went the monks and the musicians, and the candle-bearers, and the swingers of censers, and a great company.

And when the Priest reached the shore (и, когда Священник пришел к берегу) he saw the young Fisherman (он увидел молодого Рыбака) lying drowned in the surf (который лежал в прибое, утонувший; to lie (lay, lain), to drown — тонуть), and clasped in his arms (и сжатым в его объятиях; to clasp — застегивать /на пряжку/; сжимать, обнимать) was the body of the little Mermaid (было тело маленькой Русалочки). And he drew back frowning (и он отступил назад, нахмурившись; to draw (drew, drawn)), and having made the sign of the cross (и, осенив себя крестным знамением), he cried aloud (он громко воскликнул) and said, `I will not bless the sea (я не буду благословлять ни море) nor anything that is in it (ни что, что в нем). Accursed be the Sea-folk (будь прокляты Морские Обитатели), and accursed be all they (и будут прокляты все те) who traffic with them (кто имеют с ними дело; to traffic — торговать; иметь дело). And as for him (а что касается его) who for love's sake forsook God (который ради любви отказался от Бога; to forsake (forsook, forsaken) — оставлять, покидать; отказываться от чего-либо), and so lieth here (и поэтому лежит здесь) with his leman (со своей возлюбленной) slain by God's judgment (умерщвленный Божьим судом; judgment — слушание дела в суде; приговор, решение суда), take up his body (поднимите его тело) and the body of his leman (и тело его возлюбленной), and bury them in the corner of the Field of the Fullers (и схороните их в углу Поля Сукновалов = т.е. за пределами кладбища; fuller — валяльщик, сукновал, fuller’s field — поле сукновалов — площадка, на которой было все необходимое для работы сукновалов: земля сукновалов (fuller's earth) — особая глина и мыло сукновалов (fuller's soap) — щелочное мыло из растительной золы; сравн. potter’s field — кладбище для бедняков и бродяг
