ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
Брэм (или правильнее, Абрахам) Стокер родился в предместье Дублина, Клонтарфе, 8 ноября 1847 г. Отец его был государственным служащим, а значит, принадлежал к колониальной администрации порабощенной в XIX в. Ирландии. Мать работала в благотворительных организациях, была феминисткой, писательницей, дружила с матерью Оскара Уайльда, писавшей под псевдонимом Сперанца поэтессой из лагеря сторонников ирландского национального возрождения. Семья жила в достатке, пусть и не была богатой. Возможно, миссис Стокер не замыкалась на семейных заботах и интересовалась тем, что происходило вне дома, из желания как-то скрасить серые будни, на которые семью обрекала карьера мистера Стокера.
