Yet his Soul stirred not from him (однако его Душа не шелохнулась /от него/; to stir — шевелить(ся), двигать(ся)), nor paid heed to his command (и не обратила никакого внимания на его приказание; to pay (paid) — платить), but said to him (а сказала ему), `The spell that the Witch told thee (то заклинание, которое Ведьма сказала тебе) avails thee no more (больше тебе не поможет; to avail — быть полезным, пригодным, помогать), for I may not leave thee (потому что /больше/ я не могу тебя покинуть), nor mayest thou drive me forth (и ты не можешь прогнать меня прочь; to drive — вести, ездить; гнать). Once in his life (только один раз в жизни) may a man send his Soul away (может человек прогнать свою Душу), but he who receiveth back his Soul (но тот, кто принял свою Душу назад; to receive — получать; принимать) must keep it with him for ever (должен сохранить ее с собой навсегда; to keep — держать, иметь, хранить), and this is his punishment (и в этом его наказание) and his reward (и его награда).'

And the young Fisherman grew pale (и молодой Рыбак побледнел: «стал бледным»; pale — бледный, to grow (grew, grown)) and clenched his hands (и стиснул/сжал руки) and cried (и закричал), `She was a false Witch (то была лживая Ведьма; false — ложный; фальшивый, неискренний) in that she told me not that (потому что она не сказала мне об этом; to tell (told)).'

`Nay (нет),' answered his Soul (ответила Душа), `but she was true to Him she worships (но она была правдивой/верной для Того, кому она поклоняется; true — верный, правильный; настоящий, подлинный), and whose servant she will be ever (и чьей служанкой она будет всегда).'

And the young Fisherman grew pale and clenched his hands and cried, `She was a false Witch in that she told me not that.'

`Nay,' answered his Soul, `but she was true to Him she worships, and whose servant she will be ever.'

And when the young Fisherman knew (а когда молодой Рыбак узнал; to know (knew, known)) that he could no longer get rid of his Soul (что он больше не может избавиться от своей Души), and that it was an evil Soul (и что она была злой душой) and would abide with him always (и что она всегда пребудет с ним; to abide — оставаться, пребывать), he fell upon the ground (он упал на землю; to fall (fell, fallen)) weeping bitterly (горько рыдая).

And when it was day (а когда настал день) the young Fisherman rose up (молодой рыбак поднялся; to rise (rose, risen)) and said to his Soul, `I will bind my hands (я свяжу себе руки; to bind — вязать; связывать) that I may not do thy bidding (чтобы я не мог исполнять твои приказания = повиноваться тебе), and close my lips (и закрою свои уста) that I may not speak thy words (чтобы я не мог произносить твои слова), and I will return to the place (и я вернусь на то место;
